isZipFile() is reporting that valid TAR files are not zip's. if this is by design, could it be expanded to include other archive types? I am using v1.8.4.22

Valid TAR files are not zips.  The behavior you see from the IsZipFile() method is correct.

Seems like your request is "modify DotNetZip to handle TAR files, and other archive types". 

#1 that's a huge request, and #2 I don't think it's warranted.

Your workaround, if you need to manipulate TAR's, is to use a TAR library.
